One Thousand Cranes:
Counselling and Consulting

At first, therapy can be daunting.  Finding a therapist you like is key to getting started, so here I share a bit about myself:

In addition to being a dedicated counsellor, I’m an inquisitive academic and University lecturer, an author and researcher, and a lifelong learner. I work from the heart whilst utilising years of technical knowledge — I’m very focused on social services and work that betters our lives and our community and have an extensive work history in this sector.

I worked with serious problem and offending behaviours for two decades – always focused on strengths-based work and promoting good lives. In this work, I observed the transformational power of creating a space for people to tell their story. Even those who shared stories of darkness and despair, with support could find light through reflection and review, and forge a new way forward.

Finding meaning

Some years ago I began to reconsider what meaningful work meant to me.   As a result, I moved into a general counselling practice in order to apply my specialist skills to support and care for a wider client group.  In addition, I also honed my professional knowledge in the areas of life transition, depression, anxiety, grief, and palliative counselling.

Further to my formal qualifications, I’ve undertaken extra training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Life Review and Dignity Therapy.

My approach to therapy

I value my clients as experts in their own lives, therefore I seek to develop a collaborative working style.  My therapeutic approach is to foster a warm, caring, and authentic connection with each person.  I carefully apply my technical knowledge to help my clients explore their challenges and charter a way forward with autonomy and self-compassion.

No matter what service I am providing, in each instance I acknowledge and deeply respect the trust my clients extend to me and I am honoured by their invitation to connect.

Why One Thousand Cranes?

In Japanese culture, the origami crane represents a truly magical creature. It’s a bird of peace and happiness and legend says they can live for 1000 years.

It’s believed that if someone folds 1000 origami cranes, they’ll be granted a wish or a long and happy life. And so, this is my family connection to One Thousand Cranes, and also … my wish for you.
